Marine and fisheries resources represent a strategic sector that plays a crucial role in supporting community livelihoods and holds significant potential as a driver of economic growth. Therefore, maintaining the sustainability of coastal ecosystems is essential. Among these, mangrove forests and coral reefs are key ecosystems that provide vital ecological functions, yet they are increasingly under threat.
Given these concerning conditions, it is necessary to conduct assessments to determine the extent of degradation, current ecosystem status, and the influence of human activities on mangrove and coral reef ecosystems. Such information is important to support sustainable management and the development of coastal and marine resource potential.
This study was conducted in two locations: Situbondo Regency and Trenggalek Regency. The results indicate that the mangrove ecosystem in Situbondo Regency is generally in good condition, with areas classified as slightly degraded covering 149.86 ha and severely degraded covering 7.02 ha, while coral reef conditions fall within the moderate category. In Trenggalek Regency, mangrove ecosystems are also generally in good condition, covering 135 ha, with slightly degraded mangrove areas of 20 ha. Coral reef conditions in this region range from moderate to good.
