Abstract

This title has been presented on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 16.00-16.10 GMT+7.

The severe burn wound healing process can result in scarring. In line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) particularly SDG no 3 which is to ensure the healthy lives and promote the well-being for all at all ages, the study of finding materials that accelerate burn wound healing with minimal scarring potential become a trending research topic. In Indonesia, porcupine quills are used as an ingredient to cure toothache and have compounds that play a role in wound healing, such as fatty acids, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, triterpenoids, steroids, and peptides. This study utilizes the active substances contained in the crude extract of porcupine quills to treat burn and incisional wounds in rat animal models. The results showed that porcupine quill crude extract formulated with gel as a drug carrier provided a good healing process in burn wound comparable to commercial products at both macroscopic and microscopic levels until the 21st observation day. Proper wound contraction and wound closure process involving skin re-epithelialization were observed in this treatment. Incisional wounds treated with porcupine quill crude extract in a gel base also demonstrated a proper healing process that was comparable to that of the commercial drug. The crude extract of porcupine quills formulated with gel can improve the healing process of burn and incisional wounds.
