Abstract

This paper was not presented at the conference.

The sugar agro-industry has a strategic role in food security in Indonesia. Previous studies have signified that this commodity has not yet reached sustainable levels. Sugarcane as the major material resource for the sugar industry faces many challenges in its production and supply which intensify pressure on sustainability. Apart from the three common sustainable dimensions, an integrated model incorporating the resource dimension and policy-related strategy is needed to be developed to enhance sustainability. This study aims to: 1) Develop a four-dimensional model to assess the sustainability of sugarcane in Indonesia; and 2) Develop strategies to improve the sustainability of sugarcane agro-industry. The sustainability assessment model of sugarcane-based agriculture was designed within the economic, social, environmental, and resource aspects. The sustainability status was analyzed with the Multidimensional Scaling and Analytical Fuzzy Inference System. The strategies to increase sustainability were developed using the Analytical Network Process and Fuzzy Cognitive Map. The results show that the sustainability status of sugarcane-based agriculture is “almost sustainable”. Based on the sensitivity of the index and the impact value of its main activities, four strategies to increase the sustainability of the sugarcane agro-industry are proposed.
