Understanding the function of the value chain and mapping it, which entails developing a typology of players and activities to serve as a foundation for analysis, generalizations, and extrapolation, is one of the key obstacles to enhancing its sustainability. This study maps, or provides a detailed description of, the value chains centered on fisheries on two islands where the population depends heavily on these activities: Bangka Belitung Island and Bawean Island, where marine fisheries are the main industry. In order to ease their sustainability assessment using the SCOR Model, we investigated qualitatively the geographic distribution, organizational structure, technological performance, and exploited ecosystems connected with these value chains. We used a method (Value Chain Analysis for Development) that was created by policymakers and put into practice by scientists under time constraints and in environments with limited data to track how development initiatives support sustainable development objectives. The difficulties encountered while mapping the value chain of fisheries are discussed, and suggestions are made for enhancing value chain assessments generally as well as the value chains of case studies specifically.
