Jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis L.) meal is a promising alternative protein source for poultry feed as it can provide necessary protein for poultry growth while reducing reliance on soybean meal. However, the use of jack bean meals is still limited due to a lack of information on several factors, including nutritional and anti-nutritional content, digestibility, and nutrient utilization. To provide more information on the potential of jack bean meal as an alternative protein source in poultry feed, this experiment aimed to measure its physicochemical value, metabolizable energy, and protein digestibility. The study measured the physical properties of bulk and tapped density and the proximate content of the peeled and unpeeled jack bean meal, including dry matter, crude ash, crude protein, ether extract, crude fiber, and non-fiber carbohydrates. Metabolizable energy and protein digestibility was also assessed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the data. The results of the experiment indicated that the physicochemical quality of the peeled and unpeeled jack bean meal was comparable to that of soybean meal. In addition, the high metabolizable energy and protein digestibility of jack bean meal makes it a potential alternative protein source for poultry feed.
