All over the world, there are many types of traditional marine resources management. On Buano Island, Indonesia, community have traditional system of marine resources management, called sasi. Currently, Sasi system in Buano Island are dealing with two external forces, namely state and market. This study examined the co-adaptation between the traditional system sasi and the market: how they maintain ecological and cultural values. Moreover, it analyzed co-adaptation among sasi and modern marine conservation managed by state: how modern marine conservation areas support economic and cultural values. The study shows that Sasi system can adapt to market system, especially on practice of contract system between buyers and customary authority called Soa. Sasi system is also able to adapt to marine conservation system established by state. The resilience of Sasi system is affected by the way of sasi to deal with the challenges and opportunities in the process of co-adaptation to the market and state.
