Abstract

Hermit crabs are ubiquitous animal of tropical areas. In Indonesia, Hermit crabs have been the object of study since the 19th century starting in the Maluku Islands or the Banda Sea and Arafura Sea ecoregions. This study aims to look at morphological diversity, especially in the color variation of hermit crab species in the Southern Java ecoregion at Karang Hawu Beach, Pelabuhan Ratu Bay, West Java. A total of 126 specimens of land hermit crab belonging to two species there are Coenobita brevimanus and Coenobita rugosus were collected. All of the land hermit crabs were collected by hand using convenience sampling method. We found 11 color variation from all specimens, six colors are commonly found in C. brevimanus and C. rugosus while the other five are have been newly discovered in land hermit crabs on Karang Hawu Beach. These findings contribute to the growing knowledge of hermit crabs biodiversity in Indonesia, particularly in the Southern Java ecoregion, and highlight the need for further research to understand many aspects.
