Abstract

Dosen Pulang Kampung program was implemented in Margamulya, Bandung with the aim of enhancing capacity in utilizing coffee husk waste as a feed ingredient for ruminant livestock. Margamulya is one of the major coffee-producing centers in the Pangalengan area, generating a substantial amount of coffee husk waste, reaching 6–9 tons/day. To date, this waste has not been optimally managed and often becomes an environmental burden. The program involved a series of activities, including socialization, field surveys, identification of waste potential, technical training on coffee husk processing (drying, grinding, and mixing), and mentoring in the application of the alternative feed to livestock. The training emphasized hands-on practice, with a ratio of 30% theory and 70% practical activities, so the participants better understand the processing techniques. Evaluation through pre- and post-tests showed an improvement in participants’ understanding from 25% to 86% after the program. Mentoring on the use of coffee husk-based feed demonstrated an increase in body weight of 5.2 ± 1.61 kg/animal within one month. Processing feed containing coffee husk waste has economic value for farmers due to its simple processing steps, the abundant availability of raw materials, and its ability to meet livestock feed requirements. The program has positive impacts by improving skills, reducing coffee husk waste in environment, and encouraging the BUMDes of Margamulya to develop a sustainable feed production. This activity has the potential to become a model for developing local feeds derived from agricultural by-products to support feed security and enhance the economic welfare of rural communities.
