Abstract

This community engagement program focuses on the application of the appropriate technology HydroSense to address water turbidity issues in Nile tilapia aquaculture managed by the Pasir Gubah Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) in Pakapasan Girang Village. Through a collaborative partnership between the village youth organization (Karang Taruna) and the BUMDes, the program comprised outreach activities, technical and managerial training, device installation, and operational assistance. A three-month monitoring period demonstrated substantial improvements: fish mortality decreased by 82.3% (from 48% to 9.5%), biomass productivity increased by 43.2%, and income rose by 69% per pond due to higher fish quality that enabled improved market prices. Beyond resolving technical challenges, the program also established a technology-driven empowerment model that can be replicated across other aquaculture units at the village level. This model integrates community capacity building, the adoption of appropriate technologies, and the strengthening of local institutions to foster more sustainable aquaculture systems aimed at enhancing community welfare.
