Abstract

Kampung Cisauk, experiences structural poverty characterized by low household income, limited productive land, and inadequate environmental management. To address these issues, the MARVEL’s Program was introduced as an economic empowerment initiative integrating Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation and vertical garden, grounded in the Basic Needs Approach. The program aims to enhance community income, strengthen household food security, and improve environmental conditions through active community involvement. Implemented over four months, MARVEL’s adopted the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) method to ensure inclusive engagement in each phase. Initial findings demonstrate that the integrated approach increased household income through small-scale maggot farming as an alternative livestock feed while providing self-sustaining food sources through vertical gardens. The program also fostered active participation among small-scale farmers and housewives and reinforced local institutional capacity. That integration has proven effective in advancing economic empowerment and environmental improvement in land-constrained communities.
