Abstract

Families around the world are facing major challenges, including rising divorce rates, declining father involvement, and increasing economic and health pressures. These issues highlight the urgent need for stronger social and economic support systems. At the same time, climate change demands sustainable living practices, environmental stewardship, and resilient systems for a shared future. In response to these conditions, this study evaluates the role of the Family Strengthening Program in supporting community livelihood sustainability through surveys and focus group discussions (FGDs). The program is implemented in three stages: preparation, implementation, and exit. During the preparation stage, target groups such as women farmer groups, forest groups, religious study groups, and health posts are mapped to ensure participation from low-income families. This stage also includes facilitator recruitment, participant selection, and work plan development in collaboration with partners such as YBM BRILiaN. The first stage focuses on group formation and foundational training in family development, Clean and Healthy Living (PHBS), nutrition and nutrition gardens, business planning, and waste bank management. The second stage strengthens skills and economic empowerment through capital assistance, business mentoring, latrine savings, supplementary feeding programs, and scholarships for participants’ children. The third stage aims to build group independence so communities can manage economic, social, and environmental initiatives sustainably. Findings from the Sustainable Livelihood Impact Assessment show that the Family Strengthening Program acts as a catalyst, enhancing the capacity of individuals, families, and communities to survive, grow, and achieve long-term self-reliance while reducing vulnerability to social, economic, and environmental risks.
